DULBIN, OH (WCMH) – It’s been more than a week since the Pike County massacre and still very few details about the case have been released.
Retired FBI agent Harry Trombitas has seen the unimaginable and has helped to chase down countless killers over the years. He has served nearly 40 years in law enforcement
Today, Trombitas gives us a perspective from the inside on big investigations like this one.
“Without knowing all the details it just seemed like there had to be a motive that seemed to target this one family,” says Trombitas. “Whoever committed these murders were on a mission.”
Curiosity about the Pike County murders has drawn international media with an intense spotlight on a small, rural community searching for answers.
So far, few details about the case have been released.
“On the surface it may look like it’s all quiet and not anything is going on, but nothing could be farther from the truth,” says Trombitas.
He says keeping tight lipped about the intimate details of each case is crucial.
“You don’t want to say things that could cause somebody to get rid of evidence,” says Trombitas.
Back in 2003, Trombitas worked on the serial “Highway Shooter” case. He says they constantly reminded the public, no piece of information is too small to report.
“It was tip number 5,333 that led to the resolution of the case,” he says. “That lead on paper didn’t appear to be any different really than any other.”
As for Pike County, no one knows what will happen next, but Trombitas encourages the public to remain strong.
“Know they’re working as hard as they possibly can to hold these people accountable,” he says.
He says it’s also important the public remains confident in the investigators and do not spread rumors about the case. Trombitas says the lack of leaks to the media is an indication that law enforcement there is committed and unified to finding the people still out there, who killed these eight people.
