Reynoldsburg adds security measures that make it more difficult for sex offenders to enter schools

COLUMBUS (WCMH) – School is back in session for Reynoldsburg students, and visitors will face an increased level of security.

The old-fashioned way of logging a visitor’s information is out, and a computer-based technology is in with the Raptor Technologies System.

“Looking at this, this is kind of the new age way of tracking visitors and making sure we know who they are,” said Nick Keisel, Director of Safety and Security at Reynoldsburg City Schools.

Here’s how it works: school officials will scan a visitor’s ID, and the system will check to see if their information is on a database that identifies sex offenders.

If cleared, the visitor is given a sticker with their name, picture and a date to wear.

The security system is in all 12 Reynoldsburg schools.

Keisel says the district has never had a problem with a sex offender coming to its buildings, but wants to take precautionary measures.

“If they do have a legitimate purpose to be here and they are a sex offender, we will be alerted to that and they will be required to have an escort during that time,” said Keisel.

If there is a problem, a red emergency button will pop up on the computer screen to alert school safety officers. The principal will also receive a phone call and email.

Parents say the like the extra security.

“I like the idea,” said Bonnie Miller, a Reynoldsburg parent. “It is harder for me to get into the building, which means it’s harder for someone else to get in the building and I think it’s really good.”
