COLUMBUS (WCMH) — Investigators are looking for the suspect or suspects who shot and killed a Columbus-area runner on the city’s far west side.
Police were called out to the area of 656 Bankview Drive on July 10 after reports of a man found lying in a parking lot. He had been shot and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officials said the victim, Gregory Fanning, was identified by the serial number on his heart defibrillator.
Investigators said Fanning was wearing athletic clothing and a reflective vest when he was found. He was known as an avid 5K runner who routinely went out for several miles in the late mornings and late evenings. It is unknown if he regularly used the same route during his runs, but he did begin and end his workouts near his home in the 5200 block of Open Meadows Drive.
Police believe some property was stolen from Fanning after the shooting. Since Fanning had no criminal history, investigators suspect the shooting was out of a robbery. No suspect information has been released.
