NEW YORK (WCMH) — Newly separated twins Jadon and Anias have a long road to recovery, but the two, who were once joined at the head, are ahead of schedule.
“As a mother you know when you hold your child you know every bit of their face. But his face, also, encompassed Anias’ so it was my first moment of relearning his face,” Nicole McDonald, mother of the twins told CNN.
Jadon and Anias were born conjoined at the head, sharing inches of brain tissue.
Last month, the two were separated during a surgery after nearly a year of planning.RELATED: Conjoined twins separated in successful surgery
This last month after the surgery has been one of firsts for the twins. Their first time in separate beds. Their first time being held individually. And the first time seeing each other.
But it hasn’t been easy for the boys, there have been infections, fevers, and seizures.
“Serious infections close to the brain, skin involvement. They had to take the bone out of Anias. They had to take skin out … It’s just been … For Anias, there’s never a break,” McDonald said CNN.RELATED: Mother holds previously conjoined son for first time
The boys’ doctors, however, are pleased with the twin’s recovery, and their parent’s hope for the best. “It’s not that I’m not optimistic. I don’t know. I’m just more curious about what the future holds for them. But I guess I don’t want to get my hopes up. I guess I just take it one day at a time,” said their father Christian McDonald.
But each day brings more blessing and more firsts for the two little boys.
