Single mom, sons use samurai sword to fight off intruders

BATTLE CREEK, MI (WCMH) — A mother and her two sons in Michigan fought off an intruder using any means possible; including grabbing a samurai sword.

Reese Ward, 11, told WXMI that the family dog began barking when a man came to their door.

“The man turned around and he saw that the man had a bandana over his face. And had a hoodie up over his head. He realized this was a stranger,” Reese’s mom, Sara Ward said.

Reese grabbed a decorative samurai sword and placed it next to the door, and that’s when the suspect began kicking the door.

“Your first instinct is to fight back and protect yourself, protect your family. So I started pushing back against the door and screaming ‘get out, get out.’ And at that time he came over to help me. And so he and I were holding the door,” said Sara.

The man was able to get his arm through the door and pepper sprayed Sara and Reese. That’s when Sara’s oldest son Sklyer joined the fight.

“So I ran, grabbed the sword and ran at the guy as fast as I could with full intention of doing as much damage to him as possible,” Sklyer told WXMI.

The suspect then ran away and police responded a short time later. Police continue to search for the suspect and Sara said she’s not taking any more chances; she bought a gun.

“Don’t ever think that you’re safe, not for one moment this happened in my home with an aggressive dog and the doors locked.”
