MARION, OH (WCMH) — The Marion County Sheriff’s Office is warning people to be wary of card skimmers on ATMs after the device was found at a local bank.Surveillance video at a local Commercial Savings Bank captured a man earlier this month putting a skimmer on an ATM.
A customer attempted to take money out of the ATM on Barks Road when he spotted the device.“In this particular case it was loose and his card stuck in the machine, in the skimmer and it captured the card unnaturally,” said Marion County Sheriff Tim Bailey. “When he pulled his card out and the skimmer came along with it.”How do you spot a skimmer? Officials say check for tampering, are there wiggling parts? In this case, the skimmer was placed over the card reader. And be aware of what day of the week you visit an ATM.Bailey says criminals are likely to install a skimmer over the weekend, when the bank is not open and no security is around.“Skimmers have been around for many many years and they’re getting much more sophisticated,” Bailey says. If you spot a skimmer or know anything about this particular crime you are encouraged to call the Marion County Sheriffs Office. (740) 382-8244
