HONOLULU, HI (KHON) — Pearl Harbor survivors, WWII veterans, visitors, and residents packed Waikiki beach Monday for a special Sunset on the Beach.

The event featured the classic 1953 film “From Here to Eternity” in honor of the 75th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

There was also a concert featuring, among others, an actor best known as Lt. Dan from the movie “Forrest Gump.”

Gary Sinise and his Lt. Dan Band headlined the concert that began shortly before sunset.

Sinise, whose uncle served in WWII, told us he’s had an opportunity to spend some quality time with Pearl Harbor survivors, the stories they’ve shared and everything he has learned has been nothing short of amazing.

“This is going to be a memory for me that’s going to last a lifetime. Just being able to be here with these great Americans who were here 75 years ago,” he said, “being here with these veterans, hearing their stories is very, very touching.”

Burke Waldron enlisted in the Navy shortly after the attack and was stationed at Pearl Harbor. We found the 92-year-old dancing up a storm, a crowd favorite, though he denies being a dancer.

“Oh no, I haven’t done that for 20, 50 years, or 60 years,” he said with a chuckle. “I don’t believe anybody at home would believe this happened to me.”

Many more events are scheduled this week to remember the 75th anniversary of the attack, including a morning commemoration ceremony at Pearl Harbor on Wednesday, Dec. 7
