COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Fresh Start Produce Sales Inc. is urging produce shoppers to check their refrigerators for cucumbers sold in Ohio and 13 other states.
According to a notice published by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the Delray, Florida company is recalling cucumbers shipped from May 17 to May 21 over possible salmonella contamination.
The recall includes dark green cucumbers approximately 1.5–2.0 inches in diameter, and 5–9 inches long, the FDA states. The items were shipped in bulk to retail distribution centers, wholesalers, and food service distributors. The recall does not affect mini or English cucumbers.
Salmonella symptoms include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare cases, salmonella can result in severe illness. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture informed the company that a product sample tested positive for the bacteria.
While the FDA notes on its site that it is unlikely these cucumbers reached store shelves, customers should still check with retailers or the place of purchase to determine where the produce was originally obtained. Any items in the recall should not be consumed and should be destroyed and discarded or returned to the place of purchase for a refund.
Consumers can contact Fresh Start Produce Sales Inc. at 1-888-364-2993, M-F, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Other states included in the recall include Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.
