MASON, Ohio (WDTN) — An Ohio high schools is getting rid of its top honor distinctions and changing the GPA system.

Mason High School officials say they hope the elimination of their valedictorian and salutatorian recognition will help improve students’ mental health and wellness.

The district is also moving from a four-point scale to a five-point weighted credit scale. Students will be recognized using the Latin honors system; students earning a 4.0 GPA or above will graduate Summa Cum Laude.

Some students are worried the changes could take away drive and motivation.

The changes will go into effect next school year.
