GREENDALE, IN (WCMH) – A street is now named for a young woman who caught the nation’s attention while leading a campaign against cancer.
Lauren Hill’s hometown of Greendale, Indiana has now officially named renamed a portion of Gages Lane to #22 Lauren Hill Lane.
The section of the alley was used as a safe passage for Hill to walk to play basketball at a nearby park, according to WLWT.
“To have the street named after her is just an honor,” Lisa Hill told WLWT. “She’d be super excited and probably think it was the craziest thing ever, but she would be excited. It ends right in the park she loved and has the basketball court that has the stone ‘Never Give Up; to remind the young folks to keep chasing after their dreams because that’s what she believed in.”
Hill was diagnosed with brain cancer while she was in high school. She started a campaign that raised more than $2 million for cancer research while she was in college.
She made national headlines when she played in the Mount Saint Joseph basketball season opener in 2014.
Hill was also recognized posthumously at the 2015 ESPY’s for her performance at the game. What others are clicking on:
