COLUMBUS (WCMH) — A Columbus mother is recovering after narrowly escaping a deadly car crash almost two weeks ago.

Michelle Johnson had just left a bible study with her four-month-old daughter when Columbus Police said 34-year-old Frankie Stockton Jr. crashed into her vehicle head-on near Morse Road and Dunbridge Street.

Stockton died from the accident and Johnson was rushed to the hospital.

“All I remember was suddenly hearing her scream, the crash, glass breaking, all the air bags went off, tasting blood and thinking I need to call my husband,” crash survivor Michelle Johnson said.

Johnson broke her right wrist, a bone in her hand, crushed her ankle, broke a bone her foot, and has a compound fracture in her right tibia and fibula.

Her baby, Alex, escaped without even a scratch. Johnson said her rear-facing infant car seat placed in the back saved her life.

Johnson also prayed she would absorb the impact of the crash so Alex wouldn’t suffer.

She also credits the strangers who rushed in to help.

“I never believed people would just literally in seconds drop what they were doing to help us people,” Johnson said. “If they hadn’t helped this would not have turned out the way that it did and I just want you to know I love and I can’t thank you enough.”

Johnson has her second surgery on Tuesday and is recovering at New Albany Rehabilitation Center.

She said she’s put any bad feelings for the driver who caused this crash aside.

“We have said a prayer for him and his family. I’ll be honest it was very hard to do,” Johnson said. “A lot of people don’t understand why I would do that, but it did bring peace to me.”What others are clicking on:
