COLUMBUS (WCMH) — Target is planning a brand new ‘flexible format’ store near the Ohio State campus.
The store will be built on the corner of 16th Avenue and North High Street. That corner was once home to Bernie’s as well as Johnny Go’s House O’Music.
The new Target is expected to open in July of 2018. It will be the first flexible-format location in Columbus.
The 28,000 square foot store will be smaller than a normal Target and will provide goods targeted directly to Ohio State students. Target expects to sell fresh groceries, grab and go sandwiches, dorm and apartment essentials, health and beauty products, portable technology products, clothing and game-day apparel. The store will also serve as a mobile order pickup location.
According to Target, the flexible format allows them to open stores in areas where they previously couldn’t be opened. Target currently operates 23 such locations around the country.
“Growth on college campuses and in urban markets is a priority for Target. We’re able to serve more guests by adding flexible-format stores near top universities across the country, including the quick-trip shopping experience we’ll provide in 2018 to The Ohio State University Columbus campus,” said Mark Schindele, senior vice president, Properties, Target. “We’re thrilled to open our first flexible-format store in Franklin County and to join the Buckeye community.”
