Thief returns stolen anaconda to pet store

COLUMBUS (WCMH) — Who steals a snake? A yellow anaconda is back with its rightful owner after a thief stole it from a pet store Tuesday.

It was stolen from the store Tuesday afternoon. Grove City Reptiles owner Douglas DeVaul said the roughly three-foot-long snake was taken around 2pm Tuesday while a worker was distracted.

The snake was returned to the store anonymously Wednesday afternoon after word of the theft gained popularity on social media.

DeVaul said the snake, which is called, “Beaky,” is young but valuable. An adult anaconda can sell for thousands of dollars.

Ohio law states that yellow anacondas must be registered with the state once they reach 12 feet long.

While DeVaul said he did contact Columbus police and file a report, he is just happy the snake was returned unharmed.
