COLUMBUS (WCMH) – Monday is the deadline for homeowners to apply for the Homestead Exemption Program.
The program provides a property tax credit on their annual real estate bill allowing people to save nearly $700 dollars.
Homeowners that are 65 years or older, or are disabled can apply. Totally disabled veterans might be eligible for additional benefits.
Legislation approved by state lawmakers in 2014 created new limitations to the Homestead Exemption. Only those homeowners whose total adjusted gross household income is $31,500 or less will be eligible.
Homeowners are additionally required to own and occupy their residence on January 1, 2016 to be eligible for this tax credit and must be 65 years of age or turn 65 by December 31, 2016.
“We want everyone who might be eligible for the Homestead Exemption program to sign up and apply for this valuable tax break,” Montgomery County Auditor Karl Keith said. “If someone has questions, I urge them to call my office’s Homestead Hotline at 225-4341 to find out more information.”
Recipients already receiving the benefit will continue to receive the credit as they have in the past and do not need to re-apply.
Ohio residents who believe they may be eligible should visit the Ohio Department of Taxation’s website for more information, or go directly to your local county auditor’s website.
