Top picks for back-to-school laptops

(NBC News) These days, hitting the books may not involve a book at all, and but finding the right device for your student requires homework.

“You can get a laptop for as little as $250, you can get one for as much as $1,500,” notes Patrick Austin of Consumer Reports.

The $700 Acer Aspire R5 is a Consumer Reports mid-range pick.

“It’s got an Intel 4 i5 processor, so sort of mid-range processor, and 8G of memory, so you won’t find any sort of lag,” Austin notes.

The Apple Macbook has good performance ratings, but expect to pay top dollar.

“It’s 12 inches, and it starts around $1,200. It’s two pounds, so it’s super light,” Austin points out.
