COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH)- As thousands of travelers head into town to see the big fireworks show, a good chunk of travelers will first see a display of orange cones and new traffic signs.
“This is the biggest fireworks show in the Midwest and nothing will affect it,” said Ferzan Ahmed, Deputy Director at ODOT.
On Wednesday, a tanker truck crashed into the bridge, causing traffic to be diverted off the freeway for a while.
Friday just before noon, ODOT opened a crossover that allows travelers to stay on the I-70 just before the I-270 bridge.
“Traffic’s really terrible, I believe but it’s getting better,” said Ryan Pickard, who lives in West Jefferson.
The speed limit decreases to 45 miles an hour until travelers are almost at Wilson Road.
It is an option that ODOT reps say will stay in place for 30 days while a contractor replaces a section of the damaged bridge and repairs the pavement.

ODOT is footing the bill for the repairs, but press secretary Matt Bruning said the state hopes to recoup some, if not all, of the money from the company that was operating the tanker.
“Well, our legal team will be working with the company that did the transport,” he said. “They’ll try to work out a settlement at first, try to get that money back. If there’s a complication then it will probably go to court and they’ll have to work something out there.”
Shelly and Sands got the contract to rebuild. They were 1 of 4 bidders on the bridge project. The project will cost $1.18 million, with a $20,000 a day bonus for finishing early, and a $20,000 a day penalty for finishing after 30 days.LEARN MORE: ODOT building temporary roadway after crashSpokesman: ODOT will try to get money from tanker company for repairs
