GREEN BAY, Wisc. (AP/WCMH)–Donald Trump is walking back his statement earlier Wednesday that women should be punished for seeking abortions if they’re ever banned.
Trump told MSNBC’s Chris Matthews he believes there should be punishment for women who undergo abortions–if the procedure is outlawed.
The GOP front-runner said that he was pro-life several times during an exclusive interview, NBC News reports. Trump said he has “not determined what the punishment would be” for women who would break any theoretical ban.
Trump said in a later statement that abortion providers – not women – should be the ones punished if Roe. V. Wade were overturned.
“If Congress were to pass legislation making abortion illegal and the federal courts upheld this legislation, or any state were permitted to ban abortion under state and federal law, the doctor or any other person performing this illegal act upon a woman would be held legally responsible, not the woman,” he said, adding, “The woman is a victim in this case as is the life in her womb.”
