HILLIARD, OH (WCMH) — Fifty pigs had to be removed from the Franklin County Fairgrounds on Wednesday night after it was discovered that two of the pigs had Influenza. The other 48 pigs were determined to be free of the illness and will still be harvested. The 4-H members who raised the pigs had already auctioned them off.
The Ohio Department of Agriculture says it is possible for the sickness to be contracted by humans, but the probability is very low. If you visit the fair and experience flu-like symptoms, the ODA says to see a doctor.
The two sick pigs have been quarantined and will be euthanized.
The illness is not the same as Swine Flu, the ODA tells NBC4, because it can also be contracted by poultry animals.
The hogs and chickens were all removed on Wednesday night.
“There is a great group of kids here,” says Dave Fleshman, President of the Franklin County Agriculture Society. “When the work needed done, we pulled together and did that work.”
The fair will run through this Saturday.
Anyone with questions or concerns is asked to contact the Fair office at 614-876-7235.
