MARYSVILLE, OH (WCMH) — U.S. 33 westbound in Union County was closed for several hours Thursday after a dump truck struck the Beecher Gamble Road bridge.
According to the Union County Sheriff’s Office, it happened around 8:47am.
Investigators said 77-year-old Elmer R. Hoofer, of Urbana, was driving a 2001 Sterling dump truck down US 33 and was unaware the bed of his truck was raised. When he passed under the overpass, the truck bed was torn off of the truck itself and became stuck to the overpass itself.
Hoffer was taken to Memorial Hospital to be treated for minor injuries. He was cited for failure to maintain reasonable control of his vehicle.
A 2001 Honda Pilot that was traveling behind the truck sustained heavy damage as well. The driver of the Honda was not injured.
Ohio Department of Transportation engineers inspected the overpass and roadway for damage. All lanes reopened by 2:15pm.
