KEY WEST, FL (WFLA) – Two aviators died after an F-18 Super Hornet fighter jet crashed off Key West on Wednesday.

According to WTVJ, U.S. Naval Air Force Atlantic Cmdr. Dave Hecht said both aviators passed away in a statement released late Wednesday.

The jet crashed as it was on its final approach to a base around 4:30 p.m., according to WTVJ.

The F-18 Hornet fighter jet was part of the Virginia-based Strike Fighter Squadron 213.

The names of the deceased and the circumstances of their deaths have not been released.
