Amarillo resident Roman Leal set up a GoFundMe page to help pay for the new billboard. The fund raised nearly $4,000 in 5 days, exceeding the goal of $1,800.
“We need a sign that represents the true, hospitable spirit of the great state of Texas,” the fundraiser stated.
The message comes in response to another billboard on I-40 that was located near Vega, Texas. It caught the attention of many on social media with its controversial message that read, “Liberals please continue on I-40 until you have left our GREAT STATE OF TEXAS.”
That billboard has since been taken down by the request of the client, according to Randy Burkett, the owner of Burkett Outdoor Advertising.
