A suspect in a Florida school shooting is speaking out about why he opened fire.
On Friday, Sky Bouche, 19, was arrested after a shooting at Forest High School in Ocala, Florida, that left one student injured. The shooting happened shortly before students planned to participate in a walk-out as part of the nationwide protests against gun violence.
The student who was injured was shot in the ankle and transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
According to NBC affiliate WESH, Bouche said he felt disgusted with himself after he opened fire. When asked why he did it, Bouche said “To let people know there’s something wrong with me.”
Bouche said he bought the gun in the wake of the Parkland, Florida school shooting, just before the state changed the legal limit to buy firearms to 21. He claims it was a private sale from someone he met online and that he did not undergo a background check.
“I got a sawed-off shotgun, put it in a guitar case, and I also had a tactical vest filled with shotgun slugs and rounds,” Bouche told WESH.
Bouche was a former student of Forest High School. He said he has been treated for mental health issues in the past but wanted more serious attention. He also said killing someone was never part of his plan.
“[I did it] just to really, really scare them. I want to be put away where I can’t hurt anybody,” he said. “That’s why I put down the gun. I could’ve kept going.”
