COLUMBUS (WCMH)–The Union Cafe in The Short North announced it has stopped selling beer made by Yuengling.

Donald Trump’s son Eric made a visit to D.G. Yuengling and Son in Pottsville, Pennsylvania earlier this week. Richard “Dick” Yuengling told him that his employees supported the Trump campaign, according to the Reading Eagle newspaper.

A Pennsylvania state representative called for LGBTQ bars in Philadelphia to discontinue their sales of the beer.

Word of a boycott spread quickly through social media.

Sam Schisler, Marketing Director of the Union Cafe, says they pulled all the Yuengling beer from the coolers and took it off the tap Friday morning. “It’s not about that he’s voting for Trump, it’s the simple fact that candidate and his running mate do not support us and are going to fight against us,” Schisler said. “They want to reverse marriage equality.”

Professor Robert Lount at Ohio State University Fisher College of Business says it’s always a risk when company executives make public statements about controversial issues. “I think that’s one of the reasons you don’t see companies regularly endorsing their favorite candidate,” Lount said.

Schisler says they will boycott Yuengling now until the company makes a public statement about where it stands on LGBTQ rights.

“You know we have a choice too,” Schisler said. “We spend our dollars for those who support us… That’s the bottom line.”
