UPPER ARLINGTON (WCMH) – Four swimmers from Upper Arlington are heading to the Olympic Trials in Omaha, Nebraska this weekend.

Three of them are former swimmers at UA, while one is a current student.

“I think it’d just be so cool to represent your country and just something that’s bigger than yourself,” said Joey Long, who is a rising senior at Ohio State.

Long said he qualified for the Trials back in November. He knows the competition will be fierce.

“I’ll be a long shot to make it but just being there’s pretty cool,” Long said. “If I could just go out there and have fun, and if I put up a best time, try to get like top 30 or 40, that’d be pretty cool.”

Abby Chin, another swimmer, just finished her first year of law school at Ohio State. It’s her third time competing at the Trials. In 2008, her first time, Chin said she was “star struck.” Four years later, she competed with her college team, the University of Louisville.

“This time is really just for the love of the sport, to go for swimming, to go enjoy one last swim,” Chin said, adding that it was tough to balance her schoolwork, training and job.

For Thomas Trace, a rising junior at Ohio State, part of the excitement of going is that his younger sister Katie also qualified.

“It’s a good testament to our genes, I guess,” Trace quipped.

He told NBC4 he was “nervous but also excited.”

“I just try not to think about it,” Trace said. “I’m just trying to swim some best times and hopefully that gets me there.”

His sister Katie is a rising senior at Upper Arlington High School. She said she is going for the experience.

“I’m sort of going so that I don’t really get nervous and I’m really looking forward to having a good time,” Katie Trace said.

Only the top two from each event will qualify for Rio.What others are clicking on:
