COLUMBUS (WCMH) — The US Marshals are warning residents of Ohio of an ongoing telephone scam involving jury duty.

According to the US Marshals, victims have been receiving phone calls that claim they have missed jury duty and must pay an immediate fine or be jailed.

The scammer then provides information, titles, and badge numbers of legitimate law enforcement officers or court officials, names of federal judges and courtroom addresses in an attempt to make the scam credible.

Marshals say the suspects even leave voicemails with fake prompts and inboxes to further convince the victims.

If you receive a jury-duty related call, US Marshals advise not to provide any personal information or money to the caller.

Federal courts do not call prospective jurors and ask for money or personal identifying information over the telephone.

Anyone who feels they have been a victim of a “Jury Duty Scam” phone call and suffered financial loss should report it, with any available Caller ID information, to the US Marshals by calling 614-469-5540.

Anyone who has received a “Jury Duty Scam” phone call, but not suffered loss should report the calls to the Ohio Attorney General’s Office at 1-800-282-0515 or by filing a complaint at the Ohio Attorney General’s website.What others are clicking on:
