ELBERTON, Ga. (WCMH)–Graycie the dog has had a rough few weeks.

She was rescued and brought to a Georgia animal hospital on January 29. The pit bull was emaciated, dehydrated, hypothermic, anemic and had a vaginal prolapse.

A veterinarian brought her back to Granite Hills Animal Care several days later so she could recover.

The veterinarian, Dr. Andy Mathis, said he initially thought he may have to euthanize her.

He performed surgery on her Feb. 11 after she was stronger from her initial treatments at the hospital. But, he said she was not comfortable eating her food with him in the room.

So, he sat down in the kennel next to her and began eating his own food out of a dog bowl. He fed Graycie by hand until she began eating out of her own bowl.

“She’s been eating for the past 2 days, but not so comfortably, unless I leave the room, so today I decided to sit in the cage with her,” he wrote on Feb. 13. “Hopefully, she’ll learn to trust people quickly, and be ready for a home and family very soon.”
