TOPEKA, KS (WCMH)–Police in Topeka are looking for a man who was caught on surveillance video swiping a large outdoor swing from a residence, placing it in his truck, and driving away.

He stole a large swing set off of Lariza and Oscar Mateos’ property on Monday morning.

Alex Mateos, the homeowner’s brother, said the swing set cost about $2-300. The family only owned it for about a year and a half.

“A guy in a black Dodge truck pulled up, and knocked on our door twice and he realized nobody was home,” Mateos said.

The man proceeded to drag the swing to his black Dodge pickup, struggled loading it into the bed, and then drove off.

Alex said they were excited to be able to use it in these summer months.

“I mean, we can’t do that anymore,” he said.

The Mateos filed a report with Topeka police in hopes of catching the thief.

“This the first time we’ve seen anything like this and definitely, specifically in that area,” said Amy McCarter with the Topeka Police Department.

Both TPD and the family used social media to share the surveillance video images. It proved to be successful–a friend contacted Alex, telling him he spotted the swing not far from his home at a flea market.

“A friend on Facebook had commented that somebody had seen it here at Boyles Joyland so me and my brother in law decided, hey, let’s go check it out, maybe it is there.”

And sure enough, there it was.

“We’re kind of happy now, we got our swing set back, but still upset that it was stolen,” Alex said.

Employees of the flea market where the swing was found said they had no idea it had been stolen when they bought it.

The man who stole the swing remains at large.
