MILLERSPORT, Ohio (WCMH) –Sometimes, when you turn on the faucet in Millersport, the water comes out murky and brown.

The Millersport Water Department serves about 2,200 residents in Millersport and in Buckeye Lake. It doesn’t happen every day, but when that dark murky water shows up, it can take days to clear.

“I don’t want my kids drinking it, I don’t even want my poor animals drinking it ’cause I’m not sure what’s in it,” says Millersport resident Teresa Thompson.

Thompson is talking about her tap water.

“The last time I walked in and I though somebody hadn’t flushed a toilet. It was that disgusting,” she says.

Thompson says it started about a year ago. She’s had to deal with it both at her daycare and at home.

“I have to watch, every single time,” she says.

But the village is working to fix it.

“My family lives here too,” says Millersport Water Superintendent John Wood.

John Wood has been in the water business 40 years, and says last year was rough.

The village had 11 water main breaks. Each one stirred up sediment in the pipes.

As if that wasn’t enough, the village’s iron filter quit working up to code.

“The new car warranty is over… So now you’re starting to find these issues that raise up and say ‘Hey, I need to be resolved,'” says Wood.

Crews flush the water mains each time sediment turns the water brown. But it just moves onto another neighborhood.

The village is working to fix 22 feet of iron filter, but the $185,000 cost means water bills are going up.

Teresa Thompson just wants the water clear sooner than later.

“I’m very frustrated, especially when I learned our water bill is going up even more,” she said. “What are we doing about it? Let’s get this fixed.”

Wood says once this iron filter is fixed it should also clear up the sediment problems. Plus, he’ll be able to reduce the chemicals it takes to make the water safe, so it’ll taste better. He’s shooting for June 1st, but if weather permits, it could be more like April.
