HARRIS COUNTY, TX (AP) — A county toll road authority in the Houston area has released video as a warning to motorists that shows a woman out of her vehicle, trying to rescue a cat that was crossing the busy Sam Houston Tollway.

The unidentified woman wasn’t hurt, and she ultimately rescued the frightened cat at the side of the busy toll road, but not before impeding traffic.

“She wasn’t paying attention to the traffic whatsoever,” said Calvin Harvey, an incident command administrator for the Harris County Toll Road Authority.

“She could have very easily got hit, but fortunately, the other motorists were paying attention to her,” he said.

Harvey told local station ABC 13 Eyewitness News that the agency has had nearly 300 calls for traffic hazards involving animals since the start of the year.

“Our personnel are trained to recover animals,” Harvey said. “They have the tools, and it’s better to let us handle it then risk their own lives doing it.”

The video shows the woman wrapping up the cat in a towel she was carrying, then returning to her vehicle, but not before a law enforcement officer used his own vehicle to shield her from the traffic as she walked along the edge of the freeway.

“It’s not safe to be on a major roadway out of a vehicle,” Harvey said.
