It’s the pop of the glove that keeps the scouts coming.

“I can see them back there with radar guns”, said Watkins Memorial senior pitcher Chandler Day. “If I didn’t see them back there, I’d be a little worried, but it just gives me a little more confidence that they’re here.”

Day is not short on confidence or on talent. He’s 6’4, 180 lbs, and blessed with a right arm that can light up the radar gun. His fastball reaches the low nineties and his curveball has some wicked bite as well.

“My mom tells me I cross the line of cocky and confident sometimes, but honestly I think it helps me,” he explained.

When Day is on the mound, he’s not thinking about impressing scouts or even getting batters out.

“What’s usually on my mind is a song,” said Day. “Keeps me calm, like Florida Georgia Line, Zac Brown Band, Eric Church, some Miley Cyrus.”

He is committed to Vanderbilt but come June, he will have a decision to make. He will be drafted by a major league team, likely in the first three rounds and could start his pro career this summer. But that’s a decision for another day.

“If the opportunity presents itself, it will be a miracle. Just something that you’ve always dreamed of doing,” said Day. “I Definitely would put a lot of thought into it but right now just focused on winning games for my high school team.”
