WESTERVILLE, OH (WCMH) – Police in Westerville are warning students and parents about ‘scary clown’ pranks after a student was arrested for posting a threat to Instagram.

Westerville police say they arrested a student on Tuesday after that student posted the Instagram threat. The student was charged with inducing panic, booked and released to parents.

Investigators say they determined the threat was not credible after talking to the student.

Police say that any threat to school safety is taken seriously and investigated.

“We’re well aware of the ‘scary clown’ trend on social media right now,” said Westerville Division of Police Lt. Ron McMillin. “There’s too much that can go wrong if kids and teens participate in these scare pranks. Let’s focus on safety and avoid perpetuating the clown trend so no one gets hurt.”

Westerville police also recommend avoiding ‘scary clown’ costumes for Halloween this year.
