What’s next for the gay marriage debate?

WASHINGTON (WCMH) – Many supporters of same-sex marriage went to Washington this week convinced that the outcome of the case was a sure thing.

Public opinion is shifting toward support of gay marriages. The Supreme Court itself has had three important decisions in the last decade that uphold gay rights, and 36 states already allow same sex unions.

Justice Kennedy is considered to be the deciding swing vote, and court watchers say the questions he asked Tuesday were not what proponents of same-sex marriage had hoped for.

Kennedy questioned whether states should be allowed to decide the issue, and whether the time is right to alter the institution of marriage that has stood as is through the millennia.

Proponents of gay marriage likely cannot win this case without Kennedy.
