PICKENS COUNTY, SC (WCMH) — For the first time in more than 200 years, a wild elk was seen roaming South Carolina.
According to CNN, the bull elk wanderings are being followed on social media as people take photos of it in Pickens County.
The State Department of Natural Resources is warning people not to approach the animal.
The DNR says the elk wandered away from the herd of about 150 in and around the Great Smoky Mountains Park in North Carolina.
Biologists expect the young male elk to return to its herd after it realizes there are no female elk in South Carolina.
