SAINT MATTHEWS, S.C. (AP) – Authorities in Calhoun County are looking for a person who they say dragged a dog to its death with a vehicle and then drove away.

Taylor Hendrix of CrimeStoppers says witnesses say the female suspect held a rope out of the window of her car that was attached to the dog’s neck and pulled it alongside her until the animal couldn’t keep up.

Witness Shawn Sturkie tells news outlets that she had to confront the driver before the woman would let go of the rope. The suspect fled.

Sheriff Thomas Summers Jr. says if caught, the suspect would likely be charged with felony ill treatment to animals.

The Humane Society of the United States is offering a $5,000 reward for any information that leads to an arrest and conviction.
