DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – Police continue retracing 29-year-old Brittany Russell’s last steps.
The Middletown mother of two was fatally shot in the head inside her car in Dayton on Wednesday. Her six-month-old child was in the backseat. Police told The Cincinnati Enquirer the car was still running with the heat on.
The father said Russell took the child from a sitter without his knowledge Tuesday evening. He also said this is out of the ordinary for Russell and was concerned for the safety of both the child and Russell.
Russell’s younger sister, Danielle Mills, is in shock.
“I don’t even know why someone would want to do that. She was an amazing person. I can’t even fathom how somebody can take somebody elses life,” Mills said to WDTN.
Mills said her big sister enjoyed dying her hair bright colors, the Bengals and her two daughters: 10-year-old Ali, and six-month-old Haven.
“Ali was her world. They always goofed around, played around, joked. The baby, she always had the baby. She loved Haven so much. That was the end of her family,” said Mills.
Haven wasn’t harmed when her mother was killed on Free Pike in Dayton.
Investigators are piecing together information.
“I don’t know at this point if this was a person she knew or if it was a robbery,” said Dayton Police Lt. Andrew Booher.
According to authorities, Russell still had money and her belongings on her. No weapons or drugs were found inside the car. Police are looking into why she was in Dayton to begin with.
“At this point in the investigation we’re going back over Ms. Russell’s footprints for the past 24 hours. Who she talked with, who she’d been with,” Lt. Booher said.
Russell’s sister said she never hung out in Dayton but thinks she was maybe giving a friend a ride.
“It’s more than just pulling a trigger and shooting somebody. You just shattered our world. You just wrecked our family,” Mills said.
Dayton and Middletown police are working together on this case.
Anyone with information is asked to contact either department.
