WAREHAM, MA (WCMH) — A woman used her scratch-off winnings to make a big difference for one homeless man in Massachusetts.
Sofia Andrade tells WCVB-TV that she won $200 on a scratch ticket. Instead of spending the winnings on herself, she decided to help Glenn Williams, a man who’s been homeless for the last three years.
“I knew that the money never really belonged to me,” said Andrade. “This money was meant to help him.”
Andrade first took Williams to a local coffee shop.
“He was so overwhelmed by just the generosity of a coffee that he just couldn’t stop crying,” Andrade told WCVB-TV.
Andrade learned that Williams was often turned away from homeless shelters due to a lack of beds, and he often had to sleep outside in the cold. That’s when she decided to use the rest of her winnings to get him a motel room for a few nights.
“I couldn’t believe there’s somebody like her,” said Williams. “She deserves a lot of the credit for where I am right now.”
When news of Andrade’s good deed spread, others jumped in to help, donating warm weather gear and other items to help Williams in the future.
“There’s a lot of good people in this world,” Williams told WCVB-TV. “I’m overwhelmed with all the help, and I just want to thank everybody.”
