WORTHINGTON, Ohio (WCMH) – A Worthington homeowner is fed up with the smell of leaking natural gas in her neighborhood.
Amy Mamajek contacted NBC4 when another gas leak was detected Tuesday.
“We’ve been having the smell of natural gas for the last five years. And it is basically at this time of year,” she said.
Mamajek said the smell is so bad that on warm days like today they can’t open the windows to their home, fearful the rotten egg smell with flood their house.
She said her kids often come inside from an afternoon of play nauseous, with their heads hurting.

Columbia Gas said they have investigated several complaints about the odor of natural gas in the Northbridge Estates neighborhood. In fact, they fixed a leaking customer service line back in November.
Mamajek said crews that came to investigate that leak told her it wasn’t serious enough to fix immediately.
“That’s what they’ve been telling us for years. That we are just not at that dangerous level yet,” she said.
Shana Eiselstein, director of communications for Columbia Gas, said every reported gas leak is investigated by a crew. They determine the severity of each leak, grading them in order of importance.
“If it’s a grade one leak, we do consider that to be a not safe situation and that is one that they would come out and fix immediately,” said Eiselstein.

But leaks graded higher are worked into a crews schedule and fixed accordingly. As luck would have it, a crew was available to fix the newest leak in Northbridge Estates.
“The neighbors here did the right thing. They proactively called us when they smelled an odor of gas,” said Eiselstein.
Amy Mamajek hopes they can make it through the rest of the winter without another leak.
“Hopefully, we’ll get this problem resolved and we can sit outside and enjoy the fresh air,” said Amy.
