POWELL, OH (WCMH)- Officials are warning people with stomach issues to stay out of the water at Zoombezi Bay at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium.

The latest health warning comes after a recent case of Cryptosporidium, better known as Crypto. Delaware County health department officials are currently investigating 19 cases. All have a swim history at the local park and reported symptoms of the illness between July 9 and July 26.  There’s no word yet on whether they contracted the illness at the park.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, this stomach bug can cause diarrhea, stomach cramps and vomiting.

“We’ve had 335,000 people come here so there’s a possibility that up to 19 had some kind of intestinal distress,” said John Cannon, General Manager for Zoombezi Bay.

Gannon tells NBC4 that the Ohio Department of Agriculture and the Delaware County Health Department contacted Zoombezi Bay on July 20 about the outbreak.

Because of this, Gannon say the park decided raise its chlorine levels to kill all micro-organisms.

“We’ve had our water tested every two weeks for micro-organisms at an independent lab, and all of those have come back negative,” said Gannon.

Park officials urge guests that have intestinal distress to stay out of the water, as well as use swim diapers on small children and take frequent bathroom breaks.
