LAS VEGAS (WCMH) — A day after picking center Cayden Lindstrom in the first round of the NHL Draft, the Blue Jackets decided to focus on building up their defense by taking four defensemen and a goalie on Saturday.
Columbus added defenseman Charle Elick in the second round with the 36th overall pick, followed by goalie Evan Gardner with the 60th overall selection. Both players played in the Western Hockey League. Elick played three seasons in the WHL and also represented Canada in the U-18 World Championships.
The Blue Jackets originally had pick Nos. 69 and 133 but traded them to Carolina to obtain the 60th overall ick. Gardner is the seventh-ranked goalie by NHL Central scouting after setting franchise records with a goals-against average of 1.91 and a .927 save percentage.
In the third round with the 86th overall pick, the Blue Jackets added defenseman Luca Marrelli from the Ontario Hockey League’s Oshawa Generals. Marrelli played in 67 games last season scoring six goals and 51 assists and helping the generals advance to the OHL finals.
Then with pick No. 101, Columbus took defenseman Tanner Henricks, the lone American picked by the Blue Jackets, from the USHL’s Lincoln Stars. The Blue Jackets concluded their draft picks with defenseman Luke Ashton, taken as the 165th overall pick from the British Canadian Hockey League’s Langley Rivermen.
The Blue Jackets’ draft picks will take part in the team’s player development camp, taking place from July 2-5 at the OhioHealth Ice Haus in Columbus.
