COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — After months of planning and years of anticipation, the big day finally arrived and it ended with a Blue Jackets win. Columbus defeated Detroit 5-3 in the first ever outdoor NHL hockey game to take place at Ohio Stadium.

Justin Danforth electrified the crowd of 94,751 fans when he scored the go-ahead goal late in the third period, assisted by Zach Aston-Reese and Ivan Provorov.

“Not just the win. Obviously, that’s fantastic,” Jackets coach Dean Evason said. “But all the stuff with Johnny made it extra special. The stadium, the pep rally, the walk in. There’s a lot of emotion there.”

After a scoreless first period, Columbus lit the lantern first when Denton Mateychuk scored at the 14:29 mark of the second, assisted by Boone Jenner and James van Riemsdyk. Detroit leveled the game when Alex DeBrincat scored with 6:54 to go, assisted by Patrick Kane and Moritz Seider.

The Blue Jackets responded with back-to-back power play goals within 32 seconds. Dmitri Voronkov broke the 1-1 tie at the 2:37 mark with his 20th goal of the season. Then Mathieu Olivier added a goal at the 2:05 mark to give Columbus a 3-1 lead heading into the third.

In the final period, Kane scored his 15th goal of the season to get the Red Wings back within one at the 16:26 mark, assisted by Simon Edvinsson and Albert Johansson. DeBrincat scored the game-tying goal for Detroit with 3:24 to go.

But Justin Danforth hit the go-ahead goal 1:07 later, scoring his sixth goal of the season and arguably most meaningful of his Blue Jackets career. Adam Fantilli added an empty-net insurance goal with 1:08 remaining to secure the victory for Columbus.

There was plenty of pomp and circumstance leading up to puck drop, including a fly-over during the national anthem and Ohio State football player Sonny Styles lifting the national championship trophy during the ceremonial puck drop. And as part of the tributes to the Gaudreau brothers, Johnny’s widow, Meredith Gaudreau, walked the Blue Jackets out from the Ohio State locker room to the rink.

Twenty One Pilots performed during the first intermission on a stage set up on the north endzone, incorporating pyrotechnics and fire during their set.

Saturday’s victory marked the second straight win for Columbus over Detroit in the span of three days. The two teams faced each other in Detroit on Thursday in a game that Columbus won 5-2.
