Jeremiah Smith plays record-breaking game in Ohio State’s 45-0 defeat of Purdue

Buckeyes pick up where they left off in the fourth quarter as Will Howard finds Emeka Egbuka for the 10-yard touchdown. It’s Howard’s third passing score of the day as Ohio State takes a 45-0 lead with 14:05 left in the game.

Fourth time this season that No. 18 has thrown for at least three touchdowns.

On the first play of the drive, Jack Sawyer with the fumble recovery, returns it to the house for the touchdown to put Ohio State up 38-0 with 2:59 to go in the third. JT Tuimoloau credited with forcing the fumble.

TreVeyon Henderson scores the 19-yard touchdown, crossing the corner of the endzone, to put Ohio State up 31-0. Buckeyes complete a five-play, 76 yard drive that ate up 2:36 of the clock. There’s 3:07 left in the third quarter.

After Will Howard tumbles to the ground on third down, the Buckeyes settle for a field goal. It was a 13-play, 59 yard drive that took 6:21. OSU leads 24-0 with 8:34 to go in the third.

And with that, Smith has broken another record. Most touchdowns by an Ohio State freshman. That’s two records down in the half.

The offensive line takes another hit as Hinzman goes down at left guard. He got up and was able to walk gingerly back to the sidelines. Not what you want to see for a front that’s been through a lot already this season.

With that 17 yard reception, the freshman wide receiver now has the program record for most catches in a freshman season. The second record to go down in as many weeks.

Purdue marched down the field but the Ohio State defense stands strong in the redzone. Spencer Porath’s 21-yard field goal is missed wide right and the Boilermakers are kept scoreless. It’s 7-0 Ohio State with 12 seconds to go in the quarter.

It took a few tries but Will Howard on fourth down punches it in for the touchdown and the Buckeyes are on top 7-0 with 6:02 left in the first quarter. It’s the quarterback’s 25th total touchdown of the season.

The ball goes right through the tight end’s hands on third down. Buckeyes forced to punt. Purdue will start from the 12 yard line.

Smith with a big 25-yard catch on this opening drive. He just needs two more catches to set the program record for most receptions by a freshman.

He also needs one more touchdown to set that record. Both were set by Cris Carter 40 years ago.

After getting a first down on the opening play of the game, Purdue can’t move the chains any further. Boilermakers punt and we’ll get our first look at the Ohio State offense this afternoon.

Purdue won the coin toss and elected to take the ball first. Ohio State will start on defense.
