COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Conference championship Saturday came and went and now it’s up to the committee to decide who will be in the first-ever 12-team playoff.
The bracket will be revealed on Sunday at noon after Arizona State, Georgia, Oregon and Clemson claimed victories in their respective conference title games. Despite a loss last week to Michigan, the Buckeyes are safe to make the postseason and likely will play a first-round game at Ohio Stadium.
Saturday’s results changed the roadmap to the national championship and could shift Ohio State’s seeding, matchup and path. Five conference champions are guaranteed playoff spots, and one was determined Friday. No. 10 Boise State beat No. 20 UNLV 21-7 in the Mountain West championship to clinch the Group of Six postseason berth and a bye into the quarterfinals.
No. 15 Arizona State joined Boise State in the conference champions list with a dominant 45-19 win over No. 16 Iowa State in the Big 12 title game, giving the Sun Devils its first conference title since 2007 and a playoff spot.
Georgia’s SEC Championship victory over Texas in overtime coupled with Penn State’s 45-37 loss to Oregon in the Big Ten title game will potentially bump Ohio State to No. 7, likely facing No. 10 Indiana. Oregon and Georgia’s wins likely give them the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds, respectively.
Things get muddled for the committee on Sunday after Clemson’s 34-31 upset win over SMU to win the ACC championship. The three-loss Tigers squad is guaranteed a postseason berth but the debate for the last spot is tight between SMU and Alabama.
