Ohio State falls to Michigan 13-10 in 120th edition of “The Game”

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Kicker Dominic Zvada made a 21-yard field goal in the final minute, and Michigan upset No. 2 Ohio State 13-10 on Saturday afternoon at Ohio Stadium for its fourth straight win the series.

“Just fresh off the game right now, I’m obviously extremely disappointed and angry that we didn’t execute well enough. So, I’m not there right now, just fresh off the game,” head coach Ryan Day said. “As you know, this is not easy to accept, and I obviously have to take the ownership; I’m the one that ultimately makes the final decisions on things.”

After an early field goal by the Buckeyes, quarterback Will Howard threw an interception to Aamir Hall. That led the Wolverines to go in front with a one-yard touchdown run by Kalel Mullings with 12:37 to go in the second quarter. Zvada then extended the lead with a 54-yard field goal with 2:15 to go in the half. Jeremiah Smith scored a ten-yard touchdown reception late in the quarter to tie the game at 10.

Howard suffered an injury scare in the second half when he took a hard hit to the head against a Michigan defender’s shoulder. The OSU quarterback sat out for a play before returning to the game.

The Buckeyes were trying to end a three-year losing skid against the Wolverines and earn their first win over the team up north at home since 2019. Ohio State, ranked No. 2 in the country, saw a streak of five consecutive wins, including two over top-five opponents, snapped.

Meanwhile, Michigan handed Sherrone Moore his first win as the Wolverines’ full-time head coach. Moore served as the acting head coach for last year’s win over the Buckeyes in place of the suspended Jim Harbaugh.

The loss cost the Buckeyes a spot in the Big Ten championship game against No. 1 Oregon on Dec. 7 in Indianapolis. Ohio State must now wait until the final College Football Playoff rankings are revealed to see if it makes the 12-team playoff with two losses.
