Ohio State defeats Tennessee, 42-17, to advance to Rose Bowl

Ohio State dominates the Volunteers, 42-17, to advance in the College Football Playoff. The Buckeyes now have a date with Oregon at the Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day in the CFP quarterfinals.

With the win, OSU improves to 4-0 at home against SEC opponents.

The backup quarterback for Ohio State gets in briefly tonight with the Buckeyes up big. Brown is already in the transfer portal but said that he would stay with the team in its pursuit for a national championship.

Time to book those tickets to Pasadena. TreVeyon Henderson has added another touchdown for the Buckeyes and Ohio State has this all but wrapped up as it takes a 42-10 lead over the Volunteers.

It’s the best offensive output for OSU since beating Purdue 45-0 on Nov. 9.

Quinshon Judkins with the short run into the endzone to give Ohio State a commanding 35-10 lead. It’s the running back’s second touchdown of the night.

It’s Jeremiah Smith once again, striking for his second touchdown catch of the night. It’s Will Howard’s second touchdown throw of the night and Ohio State has a 28-10 lead with 9:16 to go in the third quarter.

Nico Iamaleava with the two-yard run into the endzone for Tennessee’s first touchdown of the night. Ohio State still leads 21-10 with 20 seconds to go in the half.

Worth noting that the Volunteers get the ball when the second half kicks off so big momentum swing for the visitors here.

Max Gilbert drills the 36-yard field goal to put the Volunteers on the board. Ohio State leads 21-3 with 6:39 to go in the first half.

The ruling on the field stands. And for the first time tonight, Ohio State does not score on a drive. Big break for Tennessee, who is down by three scores.

Will Howard was aiming for Jeremiah Smith, who was in double coverage in the endzone. The ball ends up in the hands of Tennessee’s Will Brooks and is ruled an interception but the previous play is under review.

Facing fourth down, Will Howard connects with Jeremiah Smith, who’s able to do just enough to get the first down and keep the drive alive.

Buckeyes are driving with a fresh set of downs from the Volunteers 37-yard line.

Tennessee did get two first downs on the drive but the Ohio State defense holds strong, keeping the Volunteers scoreless.

Buckeyes will begin their fourth drive for the 20-yard line.

TreVeyon Henderson with a 29-yard touchdown run to the endzone. It’s the Buckeyes second rushing score of the night as Ohio State takes a 21-0 lead with 3:27 left in the first quarter.

Tennessee has yet to move the chains tonight. Nico Lamaleava got sacked on second down and Jack Sawyer breaks up a third down pass to force the Vols to punt for the second time tonight.

Emeka Egbuka made a huge catch against a defender for a gain of 40-yards to set up first and goal.

Volunteers fall three yards shy of moving the chains and the visitors are forced to punt. Ohio State gets the ball at the 31-yard line.

Ohio State just defeated No. 4 Kentucky, 85-65, at Madison Square Garden. Finally a signature victory for Jake Diebler since becoming full-time head coach.

Penalties affecting the opening drive for both teams. A facemask penalty kept OSU’s first drive alive but the Buckeyes just got a false start penalty that set them back five yards.

Will Howard is able to make up for it and connect with TreVeyon Henderson for a 21-yard gain.

Tennessee has won the toss and deferred to the second half. Ohio State will receive the opening kick, which is just moments away.

No surprises in the injury report released earlier tonight. But we will be interested to see how the offensive line will shake out after season ending injuries to Josh Simmons and Seth McLaughlin.
