COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — For the first time since 2007, Ohio State is headed to the NCAA Men’s College Cup.
Led by Michael Adedokun’s two goals, the top-seeded Buckeyes defeated eighth-seed Wake Forest, 3-0, in the NCAA quarterfinals at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium on Saturday night. The win improved OSU’s record to 16-1-4 and sent the Buckeyes to their first national semifinal appearance in 17 years.
“I’m so happy for these guys, they’ve been battling all year long. And they’re playing some of their best soccer,” head coach Brian Maisonneuve said. “Such a great group. Great seniors and great leadership from front to back. It’s a special, special group.”
The Buckeyes had many chances, taking 20 shots with half of them on goal. But OSU didn’t convert until the 40th minute when Ohio State was awarded a penalty kick after David Wrona, a former Demon Deacon, was tripped in the box by goalkeeper Trace Alpin. Adedokun took the penalty and fired a laser into the upper right corner of the net to give Ohio State a 1-0 lead.
OSU came out of the locker room aggressively and in the 48th minute, Luciano Pechota fed David Ajagbe, who found the back of the net to give the Buckeyes a 2-0 advantage. Parker Grinstead connected with Adedokun, who scored his second goal of the night in the 59th minute to extend the Ohio State lead to 3-0.
“Every time I show up on this field, I just want to do my job. It’s a privilege to put on this jersey. Being a part of the Buckeyes is something amazing,” Adedokun said. “This year, I just want to live in the moment. Get as much as I can and do as much as I can do.”
The win is only Ohio State’s second all-time against the Demon Deacons, who beat the Buckeyes in the national championship game in 2007. Now OSU stands two wins away from its first NCAA title in school history.
“We have to play like we’ve done the whole season. Now we’re just one out of four and we have a great chance,” graduate defender Siggi Magnusson said. “We’re in the habit of winning. We’re confident. If we keep going, of course we can win it. The other three teams are probably as confident as us.”
Ohio State will face the winner of the quarterfinal between Marshall and SMU, which was postponed to Sunday afternoon due to weather. The national semifinals will take place on Friday night in Cary, North Carolina with the championship game set for Monday. The first semifinal will be between No. 3 seed Denver and unseeded Vermont.
