CHICAGO (WCMH) — One day after Ohio State’s men’s hockey team got a dramatic win over Michigan at Wrigley Field, the second-ranked women earned its own dramatic victory Saturday night.
The Buckeyes were able to take down No. 1 ranked Wisconsin outdoors in the Chicago Cubs’ ballpark in a seven-round shootout after a 3-3 tie in regulation and overtime. OSU, the defending national champions, started the game hot with the opening goal inside 49 seconds from Jordyn Petrie.
Wisconsin scored two unanswered to take the lead before a late second period equalizer from Ohio State’s Makenna Webster. Joy Dunne gave OSU the lead early in the third period before the Badgers knotted things up again late in the third, sending the game to overtime.
After a scoreless overtime period, the game was forced into a shootout where Buckeye goalie Amanda Thiele saved seven shots before captain Jenna Buglioni scored the only goal in the shootout to clinch the Ohio State victory.
These two women’s hockey powerhouses have combined to win each national championship since 2019 and have met in the national final in the last three years. OSU returns to Columbus to face Bemidji State on Jan. 10 at 6 p.m. and Jan. 11 at 3 p.m.
