COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Ohio State football has confirmed all the reported coaching changes for the 2025 season exactly one month since winning the 2024 national championship.

The Buckeyes officially announced all the major changes to head coach Ryan Day’s coaching staff. Everything began the day of the championship celebration at Ohio Stadium when reports surfaced that defensive coordinator Jim Knowles would leave to take the same role at Penn State.

Days later, offensive coordinator Chip Kelly accepted a position at the Las Vegas Raiders in the same position after just one season in Columbus. Ohio State got to work and now have announced all the new additions and promotions.

Wide receivers coach Brian Hartline was promoted to offensive coordinator and serving as a co-offensive coordinator with Kelly last season. Tight ends coach Keenan Bailey was also promoted to be Hartline’s co-offensive coordinator. Both will continue to serve their position coaching roles while leading the offense.

Coming in for Knowles is Super Bowl champion defensive coordinator Matt Patricia. The former Detroit Lions head coach was part of three Super Bowl winning New England Patriots teams, including two as the defensive coordinator. Patricia’s co-defensive coordinator will be Ohio State’s secondary and cornerbacks coach Tim Walton.

The Buckeyes locked in former Virginia Tech offensive coordinator Tyler Bowen as their new offensive line coach after the departure of Justin Frye to the Arizona Cardinals.

Among the additional promotions include Billy Fessler to quarterbacks coach after serving as a quality control coach and safeties coach Matt Guerrieri as the pass game coordinator.

Ryan Day and his new look coaching staff begin their national title defense on Aug. 30 when Ohio State hosts Texas at Ohio Stadium in a rematch of last season’s Cotton Bowl, which also served as a playoff semifinal.
