CHICAGO (WCMH) — The 13th-ranked Ohio State men’s ice hockey team got a dramatic victory in the Windy City Friday night against its fiercest rivals.
The Buckeyes defeated No. 9 Michigan 4-3 outdoors at Wrigley Field in Chicago with a last-second goal. The home of MLB’s Chicago Cubs hosted the annual NHL Winter Classic on Dec. 31 and the Big Ten took advantage of the ice rink for the first weekend of 2025.
Ohio State went down 2-0 to the Wolverines early in the second period but rallied with two unanswered goals in the last 4:30 minutes of the second. Tied at two, Michigan scored on the power play in the first-half of the third period before another Buckeyes power play equalizer from Riley Thompson.
Thompson ended up scoring again on the power play with the game-winner put into the net with just 38 seconds left. Ohio State is now 14-4-1 and will play at Michigan on Sunday at 5 p.m.
Wrigley Field will host the other Buckeyes’ hockey team Saturday afternoon as the defending national champion women’s team faces Wisconsin at 5:30 p.m. OSU and Wisconsin have met in the last three NCAA championship games.
