COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — No. 1 seed Ohio State continues its march toward a national championship after defeating 16-seed Stanford in penalty kicks (4-2) on Sunday.

The game ended in a scoreless draw after double overtime, forcing the winner to be decided in PKs. Buckeyes goalkeeper Max Trejo made saves on Stanford’s first two attempts while OSU went a perfect four-for-four on its shots. Marko Borkovic, Thomas Gilej and Parker Grinstead found the back of the net before Anthony Samways scored the game-winning penalty to send the Buckeyes through to the quarterfinals.

“Honestly, nerves were going but for sure there’s excitement because if I made it we win. I’m just glad we got it done, We put in effort and we got the reward,” Samways said. “I can’t put it into words. That was a great performance from the team and I’m just glad we did it.”

Trejo improves his record to 9-0-2, allowing just six goals this season.

The Buckeyes will host No. 8 Wake Forest on Saturday at 5 p.m. at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium with a trip to the NCAA College Cup on the line.
