AUSTIN, TX (WCMH) — The No. 4 ranked Ohio State men’s volleyball team pulled off a shocker Friday night as they beat top-ranked UCLA in Austin, Texas.
After the Buckeyes lost the first two sets 19-25 and 23-25, OSU roared back to cap the stunning upset by winning the next three sets 25-18, 25-23, and 15-13. The win for the Buckeyes at the First Point Collegiate Classic snapped the Bruins’ 16-match winning streak and cemented a monumental win for the program.
UCLA is the perennial powerhouse of men’s college volleyball having won 20 of the 53 NCAA championships contested in the sport since 1970. The Buckeyes are one of seven schools to win at least three national titles with its last one coming in 2017.
With Friday’s win, Ohio State moves to 5-0 on the season and will next play No. 13 USC on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in Austin. OSU is fresh off winning a conference title in 2023, claiming the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association’s regular season and tournament championships.
The Buckeyes lost to Penn State in the quarterfinals of the 2023 NCAA tournament, which was the team’s first since 2018. The 2024 MIVA tournament takes place from April 13-20 and will be followed by the NCAA tournament in Long Beach, California from April 28 to May 4.
